Mattel Children’s Foundation International Grants Program

The Mattel Children’s Foundation International Grants Program was launched in 2005 to enable the Foundation to make grants to support children in need around the world.  In cooperation with Mattel subsidiaries, charitable organizations in communities outside of the U.S. where Mattel has operations are invited to apply.

No unsolicited requests are accepted. 

Eligibility requirements:
  • Charitable organization has government recognition as required in the country of operations.
  • Organization must directly serve children in need.
  • Organization must not discriminate against a person or a group on the basis of age, political affiliation, race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation or religious belief.
  • Organization must have at least two years of operations experience. 

Funding Priorities:

  • Organization or program must align with Mattel’s philanthropic priorities:
    • Health:  Supporting the health and wellbeing of children through programs that directly address physical or mental health increasing access to health care services or promoting healthy, active lifestyles for children.
    • Education:  Increasing access to education, promoting literacy to children in need.
    • Girl Empowerment:  Promoting self-esteem and increasing access to education, health and community resources for girls.

International Grant Amount:  $25,000(USD) (unless approved otherwise)

Ineligible Activities & Entities:

  • Capital funding for physical property purchase, renovation or development (with some exceptions requiring prior approval)
  • General operating support
  • Individuals
  • Political parties, candidates or partisan political organizations
  • Labor organizations, fraternal organizations, athletic clubs or social clubs
  • Sectarian or denominational religious organizations, except for programs that are available to anyone, broadly promoted and free from religious orientation
  • Fundraising events (e.g., dinners, tournaments)
  • Advertising or marketing sponsorships
  • Research
  • Overhead and/or indirect costs (including fiscal sponsor fees) that exceed 15 percent of the direct project costs
  • Social marketing or promotions

Funding is for one year.  No multi-year requests will be accepted.

Grant Process:

  • Charitable organization must complete online application (link below).
  • Charitable organization must complete the budget template for purposes of the request (see excel form below).  The grant buget must total $25,000 (USD) unless otherwise approved.   The budget template must be submitted to:  Foundation@Mattel.com

Please indicate the name of your organization and your country of origin in the subject line.

  • Organization must submit the following documents as required by U.S. law to enable complete review of the application:
    • Current Fiscal Year organization budget, including expenses and income. See link below to template.
    • Board of Directors List.
    • List of agency management, including names of top three management team.
    • Documentation certifying the organization is charitable in the country of operations. 
    • By laws and/or charter of organization.
    • Financial statements for previous  two years of operations.
