Packaging with Purpose

We’re making purposeful changes to packaging design and materials. By reinventing our packaging, our family and yours can help minimize waste.

Our Goals

  • Achieve 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials in our products and packaging by 2030.
  • Achieve 95% recycled or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified content in the paper and wood fiber used in our packaging and products by the end of 2020.
  • Design packaging to reduce plastic usage. This includes reducing window sizes in window boxes, decreasing the amount of material used in blisters, reducing inner blisters and eliminating other windows and blisters completely.
  • Specify master cartons in single-wall thickness versus double-wall to reduce material consumption.
  • Continue choosing water-based coatings on packages whenever possible.

Our Accomplishments

  • We introduced the Fisher-Price Rock-a-Stack and Baby’s First Blocks toys, packaged in 100% recycled or sustainably sourced material.
  • We launched three Mega Bloks building sets – Mega Bloks Polar Friends, Mega Bloks Safari Friends and Mega Bloks Woodland Friends – packaged in 100% recycled or sustainably sourced material.
  • In 2019 we sourced 94.5% of the paper and wood fiber used in our packaging and products from recycled or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) content, surpassing our 2018 goal of 90%.
  • We achieved zero-waste packaging on MEGA’s #1 selling item – the Mega Bloks Big Building Bag.
  • We adopted the How2Recycle label – a standardized labeling system that clearly communicates recycling instructions to consumers.
  • We have been implementing frustration-free packaging since 2008 to minimize waste.
  • We have changed our standard design for master cartons from double wall to single wall corrugates for the majority of our packaging.
  • By streamlining our package design, we were able to remove plastic tie-downs from over 15 million Barbie products between 2018 and 2019.We have also shifted from PET straps with cleats to elastic staples in most of our packaging, thus allowing us to use much less plastic material by weight and volume.
  • Almost all of our packaging uses soy based inks.
